Students at the State Art Academy, Zürich (SKZ) were encouraged to develop rigorous formal knowledge of painting. In their first semester they experimented on A2 size canvases. Each semester their work doubled in size. As their graduate thesis project they each completed a 2A0 size black monochrome. This came about not through coercion but as a result of study, practice, and group discussion.
